Upper Diyaluma Waterfall – Sri Lanka’s Hidden Infinity Pools in the Sky
Discover nature’s most breathtaking infinity pools — cascading down dramatic cliffs in the lush Sri Lankan highlands.
If you're seeking a place that blends natural beauty, adventure, and serenity, look no further than the Upper Diyaluma Falls. Towering at 220 meters, Diyaluma is Sri Lanka’s second-highest waterfall, but what makes the upper section truly special is what lies before the plunge — a series of tiered natural pools etched into the rock, offering some of the most surreal views in the country.
Perfect for couples, friends, or families craving a nature-based adventure, Upper Diyaluma is a magical off-the-beaten-path spot that’s gaining well-earned fame.
Where is Upper Diyaluma Waterfall?
Diyaluma Falls is located near the town of Koslanda in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. It lies roughly 45 minutes south of Ella, making it an easy day trip if you're staying there.
SudiLanka Tours includes Diyaluma Falls in several of our customizable round tours that pass through the Ella and Haputale region.
Why Visit the Upper Diyaluma?
🪂 1. Nature’s Infinity Pools
The top of the waterfall isn’t just a viewpoint — it’s a playground of natural rock pools filled with crystal-clear water, carved by centuries of cascading flow. You can swim, relax, or sit on the edge and take in jaw-dropping views of valleys and tea estates far below.
📸 2. Photography
Upper Diyaluma is a favorite among travel photographers and Instagrammers for its dramatic drop-offs, panoramic scenery, and unspoiled beauty. The golden light of late afternoon creates unforgettable shots.
🥾 3. Rewarding Hike
Reaching the top involves a moderate hike (about 30–45 minutes) through open fields, forest, and rocky paths. You’ll pass local villages and grazing cattle along the way, giving you a peek into Sri Lankan highland life.
How to Get There
There are two main access points:
-
Via Koslanda (easier) – A tuk-tuk or vehicle drops you near the trailhead for a short uphill hike to the top.
-
Via bottom of the falls (challenging) – You hike up from the base. Beautiful, but requires more effort and time.
For most travelers, we recommend starting from Koslanda. With SudiLanka Tours, your guide will handle all logistics and ensure safety throughout the journey.
Is Swimming Safe?
Yes — in most pools. The upper rock pools are generally calm and swimmable during dry seasons. However, avoid getting too close to the edge or swimming after heavy rains, as currents can become dangerous.
✅ Tip: Bring good footwear, swimwear, a towel, and lots of water. Sunscreen is essential!
